On November 20, 2024, The Safer Air Project hosted a report launch event to introduce their latest advocacy report, “Safer Shared Air: A Critical Accessibility and Inclusion Issue.”

The report identifies key areas for action, including:

  • Setting indoor air quality standards for schools, healthcare facilities, workplaces, and residential care.
  • Improving accessibility for people with chronic conditions through better air quality.
  • Demonstrating the economic benefits, such as reducing healthcare costs and boosting productivity.

About The Safer Air Project

The Safer Air Project advocates for clean, safe indoor air to protect those with chronic health conditions, who are more vulnerable to airborne pathogens and pollutants. The goal is to ensure everyone can access indoor spaces without risking their health.

Event Highlights

The report launch event featured engaging discussions from industry leaders and personal stories from individuals impacted by poor air quality. Key speakers included:

Ged Kearney MP, Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care and Assistant Minister for Indigenous Health. Ged has a background in nursing and has served as the president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU), advocating for better conditions for Australian workers.

Dr. Michelle Ananda-Rajah MP, Federal Member for Higgins. An award-winning researcher and medical specialist in infectious diseases and general medicine with 26 years of experience. During the pandemic, she co-founded Healthcare Workers Australia, advocating for a better pandemic response and protection for frontline healthcare workers.

Tracey Spicer AM, Emcee. A multiple Walkley Award-winning journalist, author, and broadcaster with over 30 years of experience. Tracey is a sought-after keynote speaker and emcee in the Asia-Pacific on topics of artificial intelligence, social justice, and equity.

Plum Stone, Founder of The Safer Air Project. With over 20 years of experience in health policy and public affairs, Plum founded The Safer Air Project, driven by her personal experience with an immunocompromised and high-risk family.

A/Prof Robyn Schofield, Atmospheric Chemist and Aerosol Scientist at the University of Melbourne. Robyn has been working on the protection of our air since her PhD, focusing on stratospheric ozone chemistry and safe indoor air.

Dr. Philip Lewis, Biomedical Engineer, Neuroscientist, and Medtech Commercialization Professional. Phil has cystic fibrosis and underwent a double lung transplant in 1996. He advocates for measures that make it easier for individuals with compromised health to continue their work safely.

Dr. Hayley Teasdale, Neuroscientist and Entrepreneur. Hayley lives with a Primary Immune Deficiency and is a board member for the Immune Deficiencies Foundation of Australia. She advocates for the importance of blood and plasma donation, as she is a lifelong recipient of plasma products to treat her immune deficiency.

Distinguished Professor Lidia Morawska, Director of the International Laboratory for Air Quality and Health at QUT. An author of over 1,100 publications, Lidia has been involved at the executive level with several national and international professional bodies and acts as an advisor to the World Health Organization (WHO).
